Life story

Life story

Susan was born in Bishops Stortford, Herts, the daughter of Joseph Thomas Johnson and his wife Susan Alicia. She was baptised as Elizabeth Susan at the Wesleyan Chapel, Paternoster Row, London on 26th October 1833. Her father was a linen draper. Susan was sent to a private school in Hornsey. By 1861, the family were living in Windsor. It is possible that she met her friend Elizabeth Johnson ( a widow, no relation) in India before 1871. As they were both called Elizabeth, the younger woman used the name Susan from now on. The two women lived together in Windsor before moving to Worthing by 1891. They leased 2 Southview Terrace in Rowlands Road. Susan died on 17th March 1915. Probate was granted on 1st June to Reverend Douglas Stanley Johnson clerk canon of Manchester Cathedral and Mildred Engall Johnson spinster. Effects £1854 9s 8d. Susan's friend Elizabeth died in 1927 and was also buried at Heene.
