Heene Loses Oldest Parishioner

Death of Miss E M Woods

Heene's oldest parishioner, and the only one who could remember the dedication and consecration of Heene Church, died on Friday. She was Miss Margaret E Woods of St Michael's Road and she was aged 92. She had lived in Heene Parish for 78 years. Miss Woods had been a church-woman all her life. While Heene was still a part of Tarring Parish she attended Tarring Church. She was a fine needlewoman and the embroidery of Heene and St Andrew's churches is partly her work. For many years Miss Woods was principal of Elm Croft School. She made the school a great success.

Pupils from all over the country attended the funeral service at Heene Church on Monday. For a very long time Miss Woods was local secretary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. She was the first to bring the bazaar results to over £100. In later days she was disappointed to find that although the town was so large, the society did not grow with it. Failing sight forced Miss Woods to give up one activity after another. She retired from Elm Croft more than thirty years ago.

Miss Woods' uncle was one of the first churchwardens of Heene Church. Her family has a seat at Shopwyke House near Chichester.

The service at the church was conducted by the rector the Rev. E A Haviland. The Rev E W D Penfold officiated at the graveside. There were many parishioners at the service. The family mourners were the Misses Agnes, Beatrice and Kitty Woods nieces. Mr Gabriel Woods cousin and Mrs Woods.
