Life story

Edward was born in Worthing, son of Oliver and Caroline. he was baptised at Broadwater Church on 1st June 1873. The family lived at 72 Station Road in the north of the town. In 1873, Edward's father had been appointed clerk and sexton at the newly built St Botolph's Church in Heene. He also laid out the new burial ground. As a young man, Edward trained as a florist. In 1901, he married Sarah Jane Hill at Liss, Hampshire in January. Sarah was known as Sally. The couple moved to The Drive in West Worthing where Edward worked as a commercial grower at Elm Grove Nurseries. By 1914, the couple were living in Ripley Road. Sarah died in 1928 and was buried at Heene. The following year, Edward married Amy Beatrice Collings. Edward died after a long illness at St Botolph's Lodge in Richmond Road. Probate was granted on 6th December to Sidney Walter Bostel builder. Effects £11220 13s 8d. Re-sworn £12870 13s 8d.

“Worthing Grower’s Death”

Funeral of Mr Edward Holden

The death occurred in a local nursing home of Wednesday, of Mr Edward Holden of “Berwyn”, Ripley Road. Mr Holden was the only son of the late Mr Oliver Holden who for over half a century was actively identified with Heene Church as its first verger. Mr Edward Holden had for many years been actively engaged in the market growing industry at the Elm Grove Nurseries, and until ill health had necessitated his giving up the work, he was a member of the committee of the West Sussex Market Growers branch of the National Farmers Union.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the interment in Heene Cemetery being preceded by a service at St Botolph’s Church. The chief mourners were the widow, Mr & Mrs Chidwick (brother-in-law and sister), Mr & Mrs Standing (brother-in-law and sister), Mrs Maxey Clarry (sister), Mr Douglas Adams (nephew), Mrs Oliver Holden, Mr Collins (father-in-law), Mr & Mrs J Hill, Miss Nellie Hill, Mr & Mrs Aldridge and Mr E Hill. Also at the church were Mr Ashdown (representing the staff and employees at the Elm Grove Nurseries), Mr Coxon, Mr J Feest, Mr & Mrs P Twine, and Mr & Mrs J E Saunders (Hall & Co).

The service was conducted by the rector of Heene, Rev. J P Fallowes and as the mourners left the church, Mr A Boyce at the organ played Mendelssohn’s “O rest in the Lord”.
