Life story

Life story

Heene Hallmark

Martha was born in Langton Matravers, Dorset, the daughter of William and Elizabeth. Her father was a stone mason. After William died in 1881, Elizabeth worked as a needlewoman. By 1891, Martha was living in Worthing, working in the house of a bricklayer in London Street. On 31st October of that year, she married George Thomas Teesdale a cab driver, at Broadwater Church. The family lived in Brunswick Road until at least 1938. According to the 1911 Census, Martha gave birth to 15 children of which 8 survived to adulthood. Of the 7 who died, it is known that 5 are buried at Heene. Dorothy Alice was born in November 1894 and died in September 1895 aged 10 months. Martha Minnie was born in December 1895 and died in August 1896 aged 9 months. Lilian May was born in January 1897 and died in February 1902 aged 5. Violet Adelaide was born in January 1898 and died in September 1898 aged 8 months. Hilda Elizabeth was born in June 1902 and died in September aged 4 months. Two other boys Christopher George and Thomas Henry were born in 1893 and 1894 but both died in the same year. It is not known where they are buried. Martha died at "Hazeldine" in Tarring Road on 4th October 1945. No probate.
