Life story

Life story

William was the son of Richard and Elizabeth nee Plunkett. He was born in Harbury, Warwickshire where his father was a baker and farmer. Richard died in 1866 aged 54. William was apprenticed to a chemist in Ashton-under-Lyne and qualified on 25th February 1885. In the summer of 1886, he married Jane Roberts at the Garth Chapel in Porthmadog, Wales. The couple set up home in Westbury-on-Trym where their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in 1889. In 1897, the family moved to Sudbury, Suffolk where a second daughter Winifred was born in 1898. William ran a chemist and drug shop and included the pulling of teeth as a service to his customers. (see advert below). When William retired, the family moved to Worthing, living at "Fernlea" in Belsize Road. (see photo below). His wife Jane died in 1913 and is buried at Heene. William died suddenly of heart failure on 4th April 1915. Probate was granted on 4th June 1915 to the Public Trustee. Effects £11515 7s 9d.

A postcard produced to celebrate the coronation of George V and Queen Mary in 1911. These two were neighbours in Belsize Road and they are both buried at Heene. The one leaning on the gate at Akerdene is William Iredale Akers and the other by the Fernlea gate is William Paine.
