Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Aldridge died 14th June 1930 in her 82nd year "In quietness and Confidence" And of Frederick James her husband died 12th February 1933 in his 83rd year.

Life story

Frederick James Aldridge born 1850 in Worthing to Thomas Aldridge, a Grainer and Writer, and Martha Aldridge a Plain Needlewoman. 

Frederick James started painting as a hobby and soon became professional, exhibiting on three occasions at the Royal Academy and 12 occasions at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He painted mostly marine and harbour scenes in oil or watercolour.

In 1871 Frederick is recorded as a Grainer living at Limpsfield with James Steer a Farmer whose daughter named Elizabeth was to marry Frederick in Godstone in April 1873. They lived in Broadwater and had 9 children between 1876 1890. 

In 1881 the Census shows them living at Warwick Street with Frederick as a Gilder. By 1891 they are living at Richmond Road with Frederick aged 60yrs an Artist. 

Frederick opened an art shop in Warwick Street during 1905 which continued to be owned by the Aldridge family until 1965 when it later became known as The Whibley Gallery. 

By 1927 Frederick had to stop painting due to his eyesight failing and eventually he became blind, dying at the age of 83yrs in February 1933. He left effects of £18119.18s to two sons, Frederick, advertising agent and John Rutherford, picture dealer.
