Life story

William Arthur was born 25th August 1832 in Islington London, to George Frederick and Mary West (nee Wintle).   George worked as a clerk, and the family lived in Finsbury Islington.

After he left school, William worked as a Wharfinger commercial clerk, which means someone who works at a wharf or dock.

William married Frances Stammers in 1872 at the St. Mary Magdalen church, St Leonards Sussex. They had 4 children-

Alice M born 1878 Sutton Surrey

Grace M born 1880 Sutton Surrey

The family lived at Worcester Road, Sutton, Surrey, and William was still working as a Commercial clerk.  However, by 1891 they had moved to Heene, Worthing and were living at Byron Lodge, Rowlands Road.  William is now retired. Only 3 of their children are now living with them (Grace, Alice, and Herbert)

William died on 10th January 1892 at Byron Lodge, Byron Road, Worthing. He left £435 17s 4d (£35691 in 2020) to his Wife Frances west

Frances continued to live at Byron Lodge Worthing, and died on 8th February 1912.
