Life story

Life story

Alfred Paterson was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, in January 1855, the son of Alfred Sweet Paterson, 26yrs, an Electro-Plater, and Sarah, 24yrs, nee Clark, he was 1 of 7 children.

Alfred's father featured in several newspapers, he was declared insolvent in 1857, and in 1864 was fined 40shillings* for negligently using a furnace, causing pollution. He was also in partnership with two businessmen, trading as wine merchants, in Birmingham and London, and was again declared bankrupt in 1864. In 1866 he was declared bankrupt for a third time.

By 1871 Alfred's father had moved the family to Hampstead, London, where he traded as a hardware merchant and Alfred was a commercial clerk.  Alfred later changed career, working as a journalist before becoming an author. His father died in 1908, Alfred and his brother, William, were executors of the estate valued (2023) at £350,000; he never married and lived with his widowed mother after the death of his father in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.

In retirement, Alfred moved to Worthing, Sussex, living at Western Place, where he died, aged 67yrs, he was buried on 8th August 1922 at Heene Cemetery.
