Life story

Life story

Thomas was born in the village of Stoke near Coventry, the son of Charles and Emily Anne. He was baptised at St Peter's church, Coventry on 11th August 1847. His father was a ribbon manufacturer. Thomas was educated at a school in Leamington Priors and later apprenticed to an architect. He worked for James Murray and on his death, transferred to the office of Alfred Waterhouse. On 30th June 1871, Thomas married Mary Jane Pratt at St Mary the Virgin church, Woodford, Essex. Their son Arthur was born in Tottenham but sadly Mary died in early 1881. Thomas's sister Clara moved in with him to look after Arthur. On 12th July 1882, Thomas married Margaret Brown Dowell at Woodford Wells, Essex. They had two children, Maurice and Winifred. In 1895, Thomas commenced independent practice as an architect and three years later went into partnership with William Henman. By 1901, the family were living in Edgbaston. In 1904, Thomas was elected to the Fellowship of RIBA. At the time, the family were living at "Parkfield" Helton Road, Birmingham. By 1911, Thomas had retired and he and Margaret visited Worthing. Thomas died at "The Homestead" in Bath Road, Worthing on 4th September 1912. Probate was granted on 23rd October to Margaret Brown Cooper widow. Effects £4197 9s 8d.
