Amelia Jemima was born on 2nd February 1834 to Isaac Treadwell, a Captain in the Merchant Navy, and Ann (nee Peterson) who were married in 1830 at St. George in the East, Stepney. She had 3 sisters, Ann, born at sea 1833, Louisa Sarah, born 1837, and Mary Jane, born 1843. Their mother died in 1847.
Amelia and her sisters lived with Isaac, now a retired Master Mariner, at 7, Malborough Villas, Hackney, for the next 20 years, Ann married in 1860, and shortly after the family moved to 12 Hyde Gardens, Eastbourne, Sussex.
Amelia and her sister, Mary, remained unmarried and in 1882, Isaac died on 18th January, aged 79yrs. He left estate of £18,380 4s 1d, probate was granted to Amelia Jemima -value 2019 - £2.2m.
The sisters seemed to enjoy travelling locally, each census found them in different hotels, but their residence was at Sorrento, St. Michael's Road, Worthing. In 1891, Amelia, 57yrs. and Mary, 49yrs. were lodgers at 4, Wathen Road, Dorking, living on their own means. In 1901 they were both at the Devonshire Hotel, Bexhill, Battle, Sussex, and in 1911 the sisters were staying in a Private Means Boarding House at 30-1, Montpelier Road, Brighton.
Amelia Jemima Treadwell died on 25th September 1912, aged 78yrs, she was unmarried and left estate of £2947 13s 4d. Value 2019 - £338K.
