Life story

Life story

Matilda was born in Tottenham, the daughter of Francis and Anne Matilda. She was baptised at All Hallows Church, Tottenham on 6th July 1864. Matilda was the eldest of four sisters who all became teachers. Her father was a Professor of Mathematics at the City of London School. The family lived at 89 Lordship Park, Stoke Newington from the early 1880's until 1939. Francis died suddenly in 1889. Matilda studied science and art at North London College, graduating in 1884. In 1900, she was teaching at Brigg Grammar School in Lincolnshire. By 1921, she was in London, living with her family until 1926 and then moving to 27 Alkham Road, Stamford Hill. In 1936, Matilda was living at 45 Northwold Road, Stamford Hill. When war came, Matilda moved to Worthing, living at 24 Grafton Road. Her sister Winifred who had also moved to Worthing, died in 1940. Matilda died on 6th April 1941. No probate. The two sisters were buried at Heene along with their brother Lionel who died in 1949.
