Frances Maria Christine McNiell was born in Southsea, Hants, in 1867, her father was Christian William McNiell, 39yrs, Army Captain, and her mother was Frances Penelope Dipple McNiell, 39yrs, nee Humphreys. Frances was the youngest of three children, her sister, Ellen Augusta, was 7yrs and her brother, Hardinge, 1yr.
The family moved several times during her childhood but always in the Greenwich/Woolwich area.
While her brother Hardinge studied medicine at Oxford University, becoming a physician and surgeon by the age of 26yrs, Frances and her sister, Ellen, remained at home, unmarried and living with their parents.
After their father retired from the Army, the family moved to Worthing, living at Gracemere, Richmond Road. Frances's mother died in 1904 and her father in 1914. She and her sister were wealthy women, living on private means, and at some stage they moved to White Cottage, Abbotts Close, Worthing.
Frances died on 28th January 1934, aged 66yrs. Probate was granted to Ellen Augusta McNiell, spinster, Frank Lipscomb, Land Agent, and Charles Melville, Solicitor. Effects £6295 19s 4d. Value 2020 - £453K.
