Life story

Life story

Emma was born in Adelaide, Australia, the daughter of Frederick William and Emma. She was baptised in Adelaide on 29th September 1853. The following year, the family returned to England, settling in Gravesend, Kent. As a young woman, Emma seemed to have had no occupation. In 1882, she married Frederick Victor Chalmers in West Ham, Essex. The couple lived in Rainford for a while before moving to Wanstead. They had three children, Millicent, Alice and Frederick. By 1911, Frederick had retired and the family moved to Worthing, living in a large house on the north-west corner of Lansdowne and Downview Roads. Frederick died on 22nd February 1913 and was buried at Heene. Emma left her home in 1915 and moved to "Hamilton" in Cowper Road. She died on 1st March 1923. Probate was granted on 18th April to Frederick Zabell Chalmers no occupation, Alice Mary Valentine widow and Harry Stanley Hilbery. Effects £1196 18s 4d.
