Life story

Life story

Eliza was born in Westminster, the daughter of George and Rebecca. She was baptised at Holy Trinity, Westminster on 4 Jun 1865. Her father George was a police constable with the Metropolitan Police. In 1878, George was discharged from the police force on account of "debility and long service". He received a pension of £62 8s per annum. The family moved to Worthing before 1881 where George had been born. His brother Henry ran The Running Horse pub in Paragon Street. George became a boatman and was a member of the crew of the Richard Coleman, Worthing's lifeboat (see Edwardian Worthing by Rob Blann). Eliza died on 21 Dec in Worthing Infirmary. She was suffering from a stomach ulcer, subphrenic abscesses, lung abscess and septicaemia. No probate.
