Life story

Life story

Charles Harris was born in Bishopsgate, Sarah in Notting Hill.

In 1861, Charles' family was living in Plumstead, Kent. Father Charles Nichols Harris, 36, born in Hertford, was Clerk at a Sewage Works. Mother Elizabeth (nee Berry), then aged 31, was born near Guildford. Charles had 2 younger brothers and there was a 12-year-old House Servant, also from the Guildford area.

By 1871, Charles Senior had died, and Elizabeth was the Head of Household, in West Ham. Charles was then a Grocer's Assistant, brother Alfred a Grocer's Boy and the other three children were still at school.

Charles and Sarah were married in March 1879 in St George's, Battersea. At this time, Charles was a Tea Dealer. Sarah's Father George was a Modeller, living in Battersea.

In 1881, Charles, Sarah and one-year-old son Percy Charles Arthur, were living in Battersea. In the Household were also Sarah's parents, George and Sarah Stride. George was now a Plasterer, born in Hertford. Sarah Senior was a Londoner, born in Pimlico. There was a Domestic Nurse living with them. Daughter Gertrude Sarah was born in 1883. (She married Courtney Graham Cheverton, in 1909 and died in Findon in 1973.)

By 1891 census the family were living at Fernside, London Road, Portsea. By this time there were 2 sons and 4 daughters born in Hackney, Wandsworth and Lewisham, and Charles was a Grocery Commission Agent.

In the 1901 census, Charles was a Commercial Traveller, living in Bognor at Milrose Hotel. With them were Percy, now 21, also a Commercial Traveller, their 5 daughters, and son Leonard, plus a Domestic Servant, from Bognor. (A Commercial Traveller travelled around selling his employer's products.)

Back in London, in Streatham, by 1911, Charles was a Commercial Agent. (A self-employed person, able to negotiate sales on behalf of a third person.) He and Sarah had had 8 children by then, all surviving. Percy, at 31, and Leonard, 24, were also Commercial Agents. Mildred, at 29, was Assisting with Home Duties, while her sisters Annie and Winnie were Lady Clerks. Evelyn was working in Photography, and the youngest, Sybil, was, at 13, still at school.
