Life story

Life story

Walter was born on 22 January 1859 in Dorking, Surrey, to 30 year old Charles Wilkins and 29 year old Ann. He was a stationer and newsagent in Horley and married Alice Scragg on 25th January,1887in Dorking. They had four children before Alice's early death at the age of 34. On 10th June, 1902, Walter married Mary Lewin Hutton, nee Razzall in Leatherhead and they had two daughters.

The Wilkins' retired to Worthing in 1919 and lived in Crescent Road. Walter was a keen gardener (his occupation before becoming a newsagent) and his garden and Mill Road allotment were show places. Mary died in 1931 and was buried in Heene Cemetery. Daughter, Kathleen Eva, married in 1928 and she and her husband, David William Ball, were living with Walter at 38 Crescent Road in 1939.

Walter Wilkins, was given the honorary title of Life Deacon for his 30 year service to the Baptist Church in Worthing after previously serving as Deacon to the Baptist Church in Dorking.

He died on 6 April 1949 in Worthing, at the age of 90 at 2 Farncombe Road (usual address given as 47 Offington Lane), and was buried alongside Mary at Heene cemetery after an 11:30 service led by Rev H. W. Janish at the Baptist Church on Saturday, 9th April. His estate of £6469 0s 11d was left to his son, William Percival Wilkins, and son-in-law, David Ball.

Worthing Herald - Friday 08 April 1949

DEATH OF MR WALTER WILKINS Mr Walter Wilkins. of 47, Offington Lane, Worthing, a life Deacon of Worthing Baptist Church, died on Wednesday. He was 90 years old, and had lived in Worthing for years. It was in recognition of 30 years' work for the Baptist Church that he was appointed life Deacon. Before coming to Worthing he was Deacon at Horley Baptist Church. Mr Wilkins's chief hobby was gardening, and up to a short time ago he had an allotment at the corner of Mill-road which was always regarded as a show-place. A funeral service will be held at the Baptist Church to-morrow (Saturday) morning.
