Life story

Life story

Sophia Frances Ferguson was born on 8th March 1831, she was baptised at All Saints, Poplar, London, on 25th April 1831. She was the daughter of Charles Augustus Ferguson, 33yrs, Mast Maker and Ship Owner, and Sophia Frances, 25yrs, nee Richardson, and was 1 of at least 8 children.

Sophia lived with her family in Lee, Kent, until she was about 20yrs, and then she began a career as a private governess. In 1871, aged 39yrs, she was employed by a Landowner's family in St. Leonard's, Hastings, and in 1881 she was governess to the children of a Silk Merchant and Manufacturer in Eltham, London.

Sophia remained single, and in 1891, aged 59yrs, she was staying with her married sister, Julia, who lived in Madeira Avenue, Worthing, Sussex. She died in Worthing, on 22nd August 1893, aged 62yrs.
