Life story

Mary Amelia Layton was born in 1841 in Clerkenwell, she was baptised at St. James, Islington, London; Mary was the daughter of Charles Layton, 33yrs, Bookseller, and Mary, 28yrs, nee Cane, and was the eldest of 5 children, Charles b.1843, Emma b.1845, Julia b.1846, and Edwin b.1850.

Mary lived with her family for most of her life, she never married. After the death of her parents, she lived with her sister, Emma, remaining in London for many years. She was financially independent and did not appear to have any occupation.

By 1911, aged 70yrs, Mary had moved to Worthing, Sussex, living at San Marcos, Shelley Road. She had 2 visitors with her on the 1911 census, one was Abigail Jonathan, 40yrs, a medical student, who continued to live at San Marcos after Mary's death on 13th December 1927, aged 86yrs, probate was granted to Abigail Jonathan, spinster, effects £263 13s 3d. Value 2022 - £17,600.
