Martha Morgan was born in Clerkenwell, Middlesex, in 1834, to father, Robert, 23yrs, Oil and Hardware man, and Ruth, 23yrs. Her younger brother, Robert, was born in 1845. In 1851, Martha and her family lived in Blackfriars Rd., Southwark, also the address of her future husband, James Bewers, who she married in 1855, on 15th March, at Christ Church, Southwark.
They had 5 children, Charles 1856, Charlotte 1857, Alice 1858, Martha 1860 and James Robert 1866. James continued to run his successful Linen/Drapery business, assisted by Martha and later, his son Charles. They lived at 70, Blackfriars Road for many years, later moving to 41, Seven Sisters Road, Holloway. In 1887, aged 59yrs, James sold the business to Beecroft and Sons of Luton, and then moved, with Martha and his family to 22, Freegrove Road, Islington.
In the late 1890s they moved to Worthing, living at Irene, Manor Road, and in 1901, James ,74yrs, Martha, 67yrs, and 2 unmarried daughters, Charlotte, 44yrs, and Alice, 43yrs, all lived there.
Martha was widowed in 1912, she continued to reside at Manor Road until 1915 when she died, aged 81yrs, on 7th October. Probate was granted on 21st December to James Robert Bewers bank manager. Effects £2017 19s 1d. Martha was buried under the Burial Laws Amendment Act 1880 which meant no funeral service.
