Marie Kate Chrestien was born in Calcutta, India in 1880. Her father was Fernand Francois Chrestien, born in Bengal to a French family, and her mother Eliza, nee Day, was from Ilminster, Somerset. Marie Kate had a brother, Fernand Edward, born 1882, also in Calcutta, and a sister, Dora Marguerite, born 1885 in Marseilles. Her mother returned to Worthing to live with her children, her father remained in India running his Mica mining business. In 1891 when Marie Kate was 11yrs old, the family lived at Egerton Lodge, Rowlands Road, and by 1901 they had moved to a house named Tisree Richmond Road.
Marie Kate, 23yrs, married Edgar Dudley, 37yrs, at Heene on 13th September 1903, Edgar, at the time of his wedding was living in Plymouth, Devon, and was a Surveyor and Land Agent to HM War Office. They moved to Copseham Rise, Oxshott, Surrey, had 2 children, Jack Frederick, 1908, and Honor, 1911, and remained there until Marie Kate was widowed in 1939. Her husband's estate was valued at probate as £42394 17s 5d. Value 2020- £2.8m. (In 1923 Marie Kate had received a legacy of £9000 (Value 2020 - £550K) on the death of her father and was already a wealthy woman).
In March 1940, Marie Kate sold her home, auctioned by Messrs. Harrods, and at some point, she moved to Worthing where her parents had lived. She died on 21st April 1957, at 38, Mill Road, her address was 12a, Winchelsea Court, Worthing.
Probate was granted to her son, Jack Dudley, chartered accountant, effects - £797 18s - Value 2020 - £19K.
