Life story

Marianne Jane Stockman was born on 18th September 1845 in Cowes, Isle of Wight, to Philip William Stockman, 24yrs, Professor of Mathematics, and Mary Ann Stockman,25yrs, nee Underwood. She was the eldest of 5 children, Henry 1846, Elizabeth 1849, George 1852, and Louisa 1853.

On 14th May 1873, Marianne, 27yrs, married Edward Frederick Hemingway, 50yrs, widower, at Christ Church, Camden, London, he was a Purveyor to the Forces. Their first son, Edward F., was born in France, in 1873.

They moved to Worthing after their marriage, living at Gloucester Villa, and then at The Elms, Heene. Marianne had a further six children, Harold 1876, died at birth, Alexandrina 1877, Wilfred 1878, Marianne 1879, died aged 5yrs, Aubert 1880, and Hugh 1882, born prematurely, died aged 3 months.

Marianne Jane Hemingway died on 29th April 1883, aged 37yrs, at 7, the Parade, West Worthing. The death certificate gave the cause of death as Sclerosis of the Uterus, 5 months.
