Life story

Margaret Brown Dowell was born in 1849 in Camden to Joseph Dowell, 45yrs, Licensed Victualler, of 34, St. Swithins Lane, London, and Elizabeth Dowell, 39yrs, nee Robson. Margaret had 3 older siblings, Joseph W. 16yrs, Henry,14yrs, and Charlotte W., 1yr. In 1861, aged 11yrs, Margaret was a boarding pupil at a school in Park Lane, Watford, Hertfordshire. Her mother died in 1864 and she then lived with her sister, Charlotte, at Woodford, West Ham; her father, Joseph, had left London and was a Hotelkeeper at the Antelope Inn in Poole, Dorset. In 1881 Margaret was acting as housekeeper to her widowed brother-in-law, George Chapman, in Durham. She married Thomas Cooper, a widower, on 12th July 1882 at Woodford Wells, Essex; Thomas was an Architect, they lived in Willesden, Middlesex, and had 2 children, Maurice, 1883, and Winifred Vera, 1889. In 1901 the family was living in Edgbaston, and by 1911 they had moved to Worthing. Thomas, 63yrs, was now retired, and with Margaret, 61yrs, and Vera, 22yrs, they were living in a boarding house in Brighton Road. They then moved to Homestead, Bath Road, Worthing, where Thomas died in 1912. Margaret continued to live in Worthing, her address at the time of her death, in 1935, was Terciera, corner of Brighton Road and Selden Road. She died on 5th May at Kenmore Nursing Home, Taplow, Buckinghamshire. Effects £4971 10s 3d. Value 2020 - £355K.
