Life story

Life story

Lillian Mary Chamberlain was born to Charles Samuel Chamberlain who was Born in Greenwich London and Emma Hannibal who was Born Stoke Newington, London. They marry a year before her birth. The family moved to Canada for a brief time where Charles worked as Gardener. The family lived in Brant Ontario where Charles was a gardener. In 1894 Lillian's mother gave birth to twin boys in December and they were Alfred Edward and Percy Stanley. The family returned to Worthing where they lived at a variety of addresses. Firstly at 27 King street in 1901 where on the day of the National Census, Lillian's mother gave birth to another son and he was only 10 hours old as this was stated on the Census return, he was not given a name on the form. Lillian's Aunt (her mother's sister) was living with the family in Worthing and was also in the family trade. Lillian's Father may have been a flower gardener as this was a very popular trade in Worthing at the start of the 1900's. Lillian does not have an occupation, but her Brothers are working. Alfred as an Errand Boy and Percy is a Gymnastic assistant for the corporation. Sadly, by the next Census record in 1911 Baby Chamberlain had died and I have not been able to trace any birth and death record so far. In 1911 the family had moved to 4 Brunswick Terrace. Lillian's Aunt was now assisting her mother Emma in a florist business that was owned by the mother. 6 years later in 1917 at the age of 27 Lillian dies in Worthing and is buried at Heene Cemetery.

To complete the story of Lillian's family, her Brother Alfred Edward had joined the Royal Navy Reserves as a tele-operator and had died 5 months after Lillian on 18 Feb 1918 of Paratyphoid while sailing on the ship HMS Dalhousie. His body is buried in Basra Cemetery in Iraq. The family then move to 5 Bedford Road in Worthing and Percy Marries in 1922 and moved to 7 Brookside Avenue in Rustington. In 1947 Percy's wife dies leaving Percy £3032 in her will. The following year in 1948 Lillian's mother dies and is buried in Littlehampton, Lillian's father moves to 7 Brookside with his son Percy his only remaining child. The following year 1948 Lillian's Father then dies and is also buried in Littlehampton leaving £1800. Later that year Percy remarries to Mary Elizabeth Clark and both move to Barnstable in Devon and dies aged 73 in 26 August 1967. Percy leaves his estate of £8977 to his wife.
