Life story

Life story

Herbert Ballard was born in Chichester, Sussex, he was baptised on 12th October 1871 at St. Peter the Great; he was the son of Osborn Ballard, 37yrs, butcher, and Emma Rebecca, 34yrs, nee Holt. Herbert had 4 older siblings, Osborn b.1862 (died 1866), Ernest b.1863, Emily b.1865, and Margaret b.1869. His father's butchery business was in East Street, Chichester, and the family lived above the shop. Herbert attended the Prebendal School, attached to Chichester Cathedral, and later in life, at an old boys' reunion, he described his years at the school as the happiest of his life.

Herbert's father died in 1894 and he took over the butcher's shop, working with his mother, Emma, and eventually became the shop manager. He continued to live over the shop with his mother and unmarried sisters until 1923, when, aged 51yrs, he married Elizabeth A. Albrow, a widow, aged 47yrs, at St. Peter the Great, Chichester, on 28th June.

At some point, Herbert and Elizabeth moved to Worthing, living at Homecroft, St. Michael's Road, and on 26th August 1935, Herbert died in Cromwell Road, Hove, aged 63yrs. Probate was granted to his widow, effects £7051 11s 6d. Value 2022 - £534,300.

Miscellaneous information

Bognor Regis Observer – Wednesday 4th November 1914.

I was pleased to see the letter in your last issue with reference to the intolerable nuisance of the shouting of newsboys in the streets.  Surely it is not necessary to have six or seven boys selling, or rather yelling, the same edition of the same paper within a distance of twenty yards, for that is what those of us who live in the vicinity of the Cross have to put up with from 11.30 in the morning till eleven o'clock at night; and now not even Sunday is sacred. Cannot the newsboys have their stationary pitches as in London, that those who wish to purchase the "latest news" would know where to go. Then there would be no necessity for the present incessant bawling and shouting, trying to the nerves of the strong, but far worse for invalids whose rooms overlook the streets. It is indeed a "crying" evil that should stop.

HERBERT BALLARD. 4, East Street, Chichester.
