Life story

Life story

Henry was born in the village of Penton Mewsey, Hants, the son of Benjamin and Lucy. He was baptised at Fyfield church on 5th December 1805. On 3rd December 1832, Henry married Ann Reynolds at All Soul's church, Marylebone. Their daughter Lucy was born in 1834 and baptised on 10th January 1835. Sadly Ann died soon after the birth. Edward and his brother Henry were farming at Woodend, Blakesley, Northants by 1841. On 24th June that year, Henry married Eliza Tahourdin at St Mary's church, Marylebone. They had a son and two daughters, Henry George, Eliza and Alice. In 1843, the estate at Woodend was sold by auction and Henry and his family moved to Worthing. Henry's daughter Lucy died aged 25 on 4th October 1859 and was buried at West Tarring church. By 1871, the family were living at "The Lawn" in Heene Road. Henry died on 7th May 1883. Probate was granted to Eliza Georgiana Woods spinster, daughter, sole executrix. Effects £273 11s. For details of Henry George Woods life, please see miscellaneous information below.

Miscellaneous information

Henry George Woods was born in 1842 in Northampton. He was sent away to school in Folkestone and then to St Nicholas College, Lancing, Sussex (later named Lancing College). He was ordained in 1866. He was later a Fellow and President of Trinity College, Oxford. He married Margaret (Daisy) Bradley in 1879. Her younger sister Rose was a visitor to The Lawn, Heene Road in 1881. The Bradleys were an academic family whose friends included Tennyson. Henry became Master of the Temple in London and died in 1915. He is buried in Oxford.
