Life story

Life story

Henry was born in Calne, Wiltshire, the son of John and Eliza Ann. He was baptised at Melksham on 6 Jun 1846. His father was a carpenter, joiner. John White died before 1861 and the family moved to Chippenham where Eliza took in washing to make ends meet. By 1870, Henry was living in Brighton where he married Jane Hill at St Nicholas Church on 23 Oct. Henry and Jane had been neighbours in Chippenham. Henry took on several jobs before finally settling on working as a commercial traveller for a tile company. In 1881, the family were living in the Midlands close to Henry's brother Jesse who worked for a colliery. However, they went back south, living in Battersea for over ten years. By 1904, Henry had retired and the couple moved to Worthing, living at Glen Bank in Manor Road. Henry died there on 29 May 1904. Probate was granted on 6 Jul to Jane White widow, Jesse White colliery agent and William Standley colliery manager. Effects £2847 8s (approx. £22K in 2020).
