In affectionate remembrance of Henry Potten who died Nov. 23rd 1877 aged 82 years. "Blessed Lord receive my Soul, I am quite resigned to Thy heavenly will". Also of Mary Ann wife of the above who died Decr. 22nd 1879 aged 77 years.

Life story

Life story

Henry was born in Mayfield c1795, the son of John and Mary. He was baptised at St Dunstan's church, Mayfield on 26th May 1799. On 31st October 1820, he married Mary Ann Freeman at St Nicholas church, Brighton. The couple moved to Patching where Henry worked as a shoemaker. By 1861, the family had moved to Salvington village near Worthing where Henry worked as a wheelwright and lathe winder. By the time of his death on 23rd November 1877, the family were living at 9 Brunswick Road in Worthing. Mary died in 1879. Their son Horace lived at the property with his family in 1881. Probate was granted on 5th June 1883. Effects £12.
