Life story

Henry Benifold Dell was born on 3rd September 1879, in Clayton, Sussex, he was baptised at St. Nicholas Church, Brighton, on 8th January 1880. His parents were, Henry Dell, 26yrs, owner of an Upholstery business, and Hannah Eveline nee White, 21yrs. Henry had 4 siblings, Eveline b.1877, Averil b.1882, Marjorie b.1885, and Jocelyn b.1889. Henry B. joined his father's company and became an auctioneer and valuer, he took over the business after his father's death in 1924, now dealing in antiques and modern furniture and expanded into furnishing and removals. Henry married Rosamund Esme Duncan in 1911, they had 4 children, Henry Charles Roger in 1912, Mary Bettina in 1914, John Michael in 1920. (John Michael had Downs Syndrome and his mother cared for him all his life, he died in 1976, aged 56yrs.) and Francis Humphrey in 1923. Henry joined up to serve in the 1914 World War, he was made a temporary 2nd Lieutenant in 1916 and attached to the 29th Ground Fleet Group at Edinburgh HQ. He returned to the business in Brighton

1944 Henry appeared in court accused of overcharging. Fined £65 10s. (see newspaper report). 1947 In court again, accused of overcharging. Fined £45. (see newspaper report).

After his retirement he lived with Rosamund and John at Windward, Old Fort Road, Shoreham Beach, Sussex. Henry died on 21st November 1964, aged 85yrs, probate was granted to Henry Charles Roger Dell, Merchant Navy Captain, Francis Humphrey Dell, Airline Official, and David John Loader, Solicitor. Effects, £59,338. Value 2020 - £3.65m.
