Life story

Life story

Gladys was born in Chaubattia, India. Her father Charles Edward Wyncoll was a Colonel in the Army and her mother Mary Johanna was originally from St Helena. Gladys was baptised at Raniknet, Bengal on 24th September 1884. She spent her youth in India before moving to South Africa. She married career soldier Cuthbert Frederick Graham Page at St John's Church, Wynberg near Cape Town on 4th May 1904. For details of Cuthbert's army career, see his page. The couple's first child Frederick Charles was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire in 1907 and baptised in Fife, Scotland. A daughter Margaret Mary Graham was born in Dundee in 1909. In 1911, whilst Cuthbert was serving abroad, Gladys stayed with her parents in Kensington. During the First World War, Cuthbert served in Italy and was severely wounded. He died in hospital in London on 6th December 1919. At the time, the family were living in Worthing at 45 Downview Road which was Glady's parents home. Cuthbert was buried at Heene on 10th December. Charles Wyncoll died in 1942 and his wife in 1943, both at East Hill House, Liss, Hampshire. By 1939, Gladys was living with her daughter and son-in-law in Beckenham, Kent. Gladys died on 7th November 1966 at the King Edward VII Hospital in Midhurst. Her address was given as East Hill Hotel, Liss. Probate was granted on 1st February 1967 to Frederick Charles Graham Page DSO Brigadier and Margaret Mary Graham Breeze married woman. Effects £12238.
