Life story

Life story

George Henry Thomas Van Notten Pole was born at Leamington in 1852. He was the only son of Henry Van Notten Pole , also buried at Heene (NWS Row 4 Plot 10)  and Eliza Anne nee Dickins. The Pole family could trace their descent back to Henry de Ferrars, a supporter of William the Conquerer, who was rewarded with Tilbury Castle and entitled to be the Earls of Derby. Each generation is set out in Burke's Peerage.  Succession sometimes followed the female line and a daughter married Sir Peter de la Pole. A few generations later, Milicent Pole married Charles Van Hotten in 1769, who took the name of Pole and was created 1st Baronet Wolverton in 1791. Their son became 2nd Baronet. One of Sir Peter', brothers, Rev. Henry Pole was George's grandfather. The name Van Notten was reassumed by royal licence in 1835. George joined the Eighteenth Hussars and reached the rank of Captain. he married Lucy Jeanette, maiden name unknown, and when he died in 1910 they were living at 'Homeleigh'. in Rowlands Road, Worthing. he left £1610 0s 9d to Lucy.
