Life story

Life story

George was born in Lewisham, Kent, the son of William Mellett Hollis and his wife Elizabeth. He was baptised at St Mary's church, Lewisham on 3rd July 1844. By 1851, the family were living in Brighton after William's retirement as a surgeon. George trained as a solicitor, obtaining a BA in 1866 and being called to the Bar on 6th June 1868. George set up his practice in Marylebone. On 27th April 1872, George married Susannah Smith at St Michael's church, Highgate. The couple lived in a large house in Dartmouth Park Hill, Marylebone. They had ten children. By 1891, George had retired. The family moved to Worthing in 1913, living at "Floriana" in Downview Road. George died on 25th January 1919. Probate was granted on 18th February to George Mercer Hollis solicitor and Rev. Frederick James Hollis clerk. Effects £4680 6s 8d.

Another son remembered on his parents stone is the Rev. Francis Septimus Hollis. He was born in Marylebone on 10th November 1884. Francis was educated at St George's School, Harpenden and studied theology at Dorchester Missionary College. He was ordained in 1914 and served as a curate of Ashby de la Zouche. He was sent to Kuching in Sarawak in 1916, serving as assistant priest at St Thomas Cathedral. Between 1923 and 1928, Francis was in charge of the Land Dyak Mission.  He was appointed Archdeacon of Sarawak in 1934. Francis was appointed Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak in 1938. He was interned by the Japanese in 1942 at Batu Lintang Camp in Kuching. His health was badly affected, especially his eyesight. After his release in 1945, Francis stayed in Sarawak until 1948 when due to his poor health, he resigned and returned to England. Until 1955, Francis served as vicar of Stanford with Swinford in Leicestershire. Francis died at Leicester Royal Infirmary on 4th February 1955.
