Life story

Life story

George William Guest was born in Ashton on Mersey, Cheshire, where he was baptised on 12th September 1830. He was the only son of Wilbraham Bootle Guest, 35yrs, Clerk in Holy Orders, and Ann, 22yrs, nee Stelfox. George had a sister, Sarah Ann, born 1832. When George was 5yrs old, his mother died, aged 27yrs. In 1849, George went to Cambridge University, St. John's College, he gained his BA in 1853, and MA in 1857. He had chosen a church career, like his father and grandfather, and he was ordained priest at Chester Cathedral in 1855. While at university, he married Emily Ann Webster, 24yrs, on 19th March 1853, at St. Mary, Islington. They had no children. George was a Curate at Salford and Derwent before being appointed Vicar Choral of York Cathedral in 1862. He was a Minor Canon, and later, Succentor Vicariorum.

George was also Rector at All Saints, York, 1864-1881, before moving to Lymm, Cheshire, in 1881 where he remained until 1897. (Please see the plaque below in miscellaneous information)

George and Emily then moved to Worthing, Sussex; they lived at The Sycamores, Byron Road, where George died, aged 70yrs, on 5th May 1901. He left estate of £4987 6s. to his widow, Emily, value 2021 - £628K.
