Life story

Life story

George William Burden was born on 14th July 1859, he was baptised at All Soul's Church, Marylebone, on 3rd June 1860. His father was George Burden, 29yrs, Servant, and mother, Hannah nee Crier, 29yrs, they lived at 10, Mortimer Street.

In 1870, aged 10yrs, George was admitted to St. Clement Dane's Grammar School and was withdrawn from the school on 3rd December 1874, the year following his father's death. He had a sister, Florence Jane, who was born on 22nd June 1873 just one month after their father died.

In 1881 George, aged 21yrs, married Millicent Finnis, 27yrs, on 4th August, at Heene, Worthing. They moved to 14, Kensal Road, Paddington, where they lived for over forty years. George was a Civil Service clerk, later working for the Board of Education. George and Millicent had two children, Mabel Fannie, 1882, and Cecil George Edward, 1892. Their son was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme, 1915.

George was widowed in 1924 when Millicent died, aged 72yrs, and shortly afterwards he moved to Worthing, living at 26, Northcourt Road. George died, aged 66yrs, on 12th February 1926, probate was granted to Elizabeth Burden, widow, and Mabel Fannie Burden, spinster. Effects £1703 10s 9d. Value 2019 - £100k.
