"The News" Upper Norwood 16 Jul 1915

Presentation to the Rev. F E White and Mrs White A large gathering of parishioners of St Stephen’s, South Dulwich, gathered together on Saturday, on the lawn of the old vicarage adjoining the church to say a formal goodbye to the Rev. F E White and Mrs White, and to mark the event by presenting gifts as tokens of appreciation of a long and faithful ministry on the part of the late vicar. It may be mentioned, as already recorded in these columns that the retirement of Rev F E White from his pastorate as vicar was due to throat trouble. On Saturday, Mr A G Meggy, people’s warden and Mr C T K Alton, vicar’s warden were the chief speakers, and in eulogistic words voiced the feelings of the congregation of St Stephen’s in expressing deep regret at losing the ministrations of the Rev F E White as vicar and the hearty co-operation in church work of Mrs White. The Bishop of Woolwich then handed over to the Rev F E White a cheque for the handsome sum of £1159 together with an album with the names of the subscribers. The Ladies Work Party gave to Mrs White by the hands of Mrs Clark a beautifully chased gold watch. The vicar in his acknowledgement of the kindness thus shown to Mrs White and himself, spoke of his 24-year connection with the church, 21 years of which period was as vicar. The gathering must have been a very gratifying one to the late vicar and Mrs White as it was a striking testimony to the high esteem in which they are held by all sections of their now late parishioners. £1159 in 2020 approx £68K.
