Life story

Life story

Florence was born in Poplar, Middx, the daughter of Enoch and Jane. Her father was a baker and confectioner. By 1891, the family had moved to Mile End but Enoch kept the house in Poplar. On 21st March 1897, Florence married Reginald Douglas Arthur at Trinity Church, Stepney. Reginald took over the business in Mile End whilst Enoch moved back to St Leonards Road to live with his daughter Jane. Reginald and Florence had four children but one died as a baby. By 1911, the family had moved to North Holmwood near Dorking, Surrey where Reginald worked as a furniture dealer. In 1923, Reginald had retired, so the couple moved to "Trevose" 18 Mill Road, Worthing. Reginald joined Worthing Bowling Club and represented his club, county and country. The couple travelled to South Africa in 1932, where Reginald took part in a tournament. Reginald died on 27th April 1934 and was buried at Heene Cemetery. In December 1937, Florence married Captain George William Sanderson in Worthing. He was a widower who had spent most of his life in India. He had served as a garrison engineer for the Indian Army. He was also a councillor for Broadwater ward for a while. He was one of the witnesses at the infamous trial of Oswald Moseley and Captain Budd after the riot at the Pier Pavilion in 1934. George and Florence lived at "Trevose" until Florence's death on 4th April 1945. Probate was granted on 24th September to Westminster Bank Ltd and Harry John Watling accountant. Effects £119112 7s 8d. Mr Watling was left £250 and Archibald Luff, gardener, was left £100.

George Sanderson died in 1949 and is buried at Broadwater.

Enoch Richardson moved to Worthing with his daughter Jane around 1911. He lived with his brother-in-law Octavius at 22 Selden Road and for many years was a sidesman at St George's Church. In 1934, Reginald and Florence had a screen built in the church and also a memorial tablet placed near the pulpit in memory of Florence's father who died in 1922. The screen is still there although through re-ordering it has been moved a couple of times. It is 40 feet long and 11 feet high and is delicate and beautiful.

MEMORIAL SCREEN

BEAUTIFUL ADDITION TO ST GEORGE’S CHURCH

The memorial screen recently dedicated by the Rural Dean in St George’s Church, East Worthing, is an effective and beautiful addition to the interior decorations of the church. It is erected to the memory of the late Mr Enoch Richardson of Frederick’s Villa, Selden Road by his son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs R D Arthur of Dorking.

Of Austrian oak, the screen consists of a series of one large and ten small arches without any doors or gates. It is approximately 40 feet long by 11 feet high and is the work of Messrs Budd and Co of St James’s Street, Brighton. It extends across the front of the chancel between the pulpit and the organ.

A pleasing feature about the screen is the fact that it does not obtrude itself upon the notice but is so exquisitely blended into the general scheme of the church interior that it merely appears an integral part of a harmonious whole. The delicate carving is in keeping with that of the frame of the organ.

A memorial brass tablet mounted on oak is also to be erected near the pulpit. It will bear the inscription "The screen was erected by Reginald and Florence Arthur in memory of the father of the latter, Enoch Richardson, for many years sidesman of the church."
