Ethel Docking (buried 1909)

Ethel was born in Enfield, Essex, the elder of the two daughters of William Cracknell Docking, a member of the London Stock Exchange with an office in Throgmorton Street, and his wife, Elizabeth, nee Stephens. In some documents William's second name is written as Cotterel but Cracknell is correct. Ethel was baptised at Jesus Chapel, Enfield, on 8 January 1879. In 1881 the family was living at the Retreat, Potters Bar, but by 1891 Elizabeth and her daughters Ethel and Eva, had moved to Church Road, South Mimms, Middlesex. Elizabeth was now head of the household and still described as married although William is not on the Census form. He died the following year. In 1901 Ethel was a visitor in the household of Hugh Storr, a physician and surgeon, and his wife Ellen No family connection was found. In an attempt to find where Ethel might have lived in Worthing the whereabouts of her mother were traced to a house called "Redwood" in Harrow Road. Elizabeth is shown living there with a servant in 1911. Ethel did not marry so it very likely that mother and daughter had lived in Harrow Road together. There was sadness in the family for although Elizabeth lived to a good age William died at 42, Eva at 18 and Ethel at 28. No probate details were found. Ethel was buried at Heene on 12 September 1907.
