Life story

Emily Henderson was born in 1841 in Durham. Her parents were John Henderson, 33yrs, and Hannah, 23yrs, nee Chipchase. She was the oldest of 5 children, Ann b.1850, Mary b.1854, Arthur b.1858, and Kate b.1860. Her father was a successful businessman, manufacturing carpets and a coal owner. In 1864 he was elected as a Liberal MP and sat in the House of Commons from 1864 to 1874.

Emily married in 1863, she was 21yrs, her husband was John Russell, 32yrs, a GP/Surgeon, also born in Durham. They lived in London, at 72, Warwick Square, where their first child, John Charles was born in 1864. By 1871 they had moved back North and had 3 more children, Una b.1866, William b.1865, and Gilbert b.1868. (Died 1871). A daughter, Vera Naomi, was born in 1873.

After retiring, John and Emily moved to Worthing with their daughter, Vera, 18yrs, living, in 1891, at 'Waldridge', Belsize Road. Emily died, aged 50yrs, on 17th September 1892, administration was granted to her husband, effects £2901 7s 0d. Value 2021 - £272K.

Her husband, John Russell, died 10 days later, on 27th September 1892, aged 62yrs.
