Life story

Emily Harriet Short was born in Chelsea, Middlesex, on 28th December 1860, she was the daughter of William Short and Sarah.

Emily's mother married on 4th April 1870 in Broadwater, Worthing, her husband was Charles Honess, 29yrs, a Royal Navy Seaman, and Emily's half-brother, William, was born in 1873. The family lived at 36, Park Road, Worthing, Sussex.

On 13th September 1882, Emily married Arthur Ashling, 22yrs, a builder and contractor, at the parish church Broadwater, they had 5 children, Ruby b.1884, Elsie b.1886, Mabel b.1891, Leonard b.1897, and Cyril, b.1900 (died aged 5months). The family lived at 14, Milton Street, Worthing, before moving to Karos, Rowlands Road, Worthing, and in 1911 all 3 of her daughters were in domestic service.  Arthur filed for bankruptcy in 1911, and he died in 1914, their daughter, Elsie, died in 1918.

By 1921 Emily had moved to 16, Thorn Road, Worthing, where she was running a lodging house, her son, Leonard, and her mother-in-law were resident with her.

Emily died on 11th December 1934, aged 73yrs, she was buried at Heene Cemetery on 15th December.
