Ellen Augusta McNiell was born on 4th November 1859 in Greenwich, her father was Christian William McNiell, 31yrs, Army Captain, and her mother was Frances Penelope Dipple McNiell, 31yrs, nee Humphreys. She was the eldest of 3 children, her brother, Hardinge Charles Christian was born in 1864 and her sister, Frances Maria Christine, in 1867. The family moved several times during her childhood but always in the Greenwich/Woolwich area.
While her brother Hardinge studied medicine at Oxford University, becoming a physician and surgeon by the age of 26yrs, Ellen and her sister, Frances, remained at home, unmarried and living with their parents.
After their father retired from the Army, the family moved to Worthing, living at Gracemere, Richmond Road. Ellen's mother died in 1904 and her father in 1914. She and her sister were wealthy women, living on private means, and at some stage they moved to 7, Abbotts Close, Worthing, Frances died in 1934 and Ellen remained there until her death on 17th November 1952, aged 93yrs. Ellen was a Roman Catholic and her requiem mass was held on 21st November 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Worthing.
