Life story

Life story

Elizabeth was born in Portsea, the daughter of Sabina Fletcher and an unknown father. In 1871, Sabina married Alfred Shawyer, a gardener, in Portsea. In 1873, Alfred was sent to prison for larceny. Elizabeth's mother left her at the local Union Workhouse and disappeared. Elizabeth was schooled at the workhouse and trained as a servant. She went to work for a retired army officer and his family in Portsea. By 1901, Elizabeth was in London working for a theatrical manager in Putney. She married David William White at St John, Isleworth on 12 Jun 1904. By 1911, the couple had moved to Worthing, living in Ham Road and then in Thorn Road. They had no children. Elizabeth died at Burnham on Crouch after a long illness on 7 Nov 1921. No Probate.
