Life story

Life story

Elizabeth Cross Denton was born in 1832 in Northallerton Yorkshire to Robert Cross and Charlotte Denton.  Charlotte's Father Robert worked as a collector of Inland Revenue. 

When Charlotte was aged 22 she was a house servant to Matthew Harker a retired butcher.  She then went onto become a resident Governess to John Warneford and his family living in Acaster Malbis, Yorkshire.  In 1871 she is living at 11 Arlington Street, Kingston upon Hull, and working as a General and French Teacher.  In 1881 she is still living at 11 Arlington Street but is now the Principal of a Ladies school.  By 1891 she is now a Schoolmistress and is living at 6  Arlington Street, Kingston Upon Hull. By 1901 she has moved to 1 Addesbury Grove Kingston upon Hull and has retired from Teaching. In1911 Elizabeth is boarding with Fanny Hewson at 23 Park Grove Hull.

Sometime between 1911 and 1919 she moved to Nuthurst Belsize Road, Worthing, where she died on 18th November 1919. 

She left an amount of £652 7s 9d (£18945 in 2020) with probate to Richard Chapman Hewson and George Stephenson Jordeson.
