Life story

Life story

Eliza was born in Langton Matravers, Dorset, the daughter of William and Elizabeth. Her father was a stonemason and often worked away from home. He died when Eliza was a child and her mother remarried. Her new husband was John Edmunds, a carter. Elizabeth and John married in 1885 and moved to Poole. Both Eliza and her sister Martha moved to Worthing where on 27th February 1893, Eliza married William Patrick Fitzgerald at Broadwater Church. William was a soldier, born in Ireland. He served with the East Kent Regiment of Foot and was based at Aldershot. Their daughter Olive Mabel (known as Mabel) was born in Aldershot on 26th February 1894. By 1896, William and Eliza were back in Worthing, living at the back of 9 Brunswick Road. Constance May was born in 1896 and Kathleen Daisy was born in 1897. Both were baptised at Heene church. William worked as a bath chair man but his health was poor. He died of heart disease on 31st December 1897 and was buried at Heene on 2nd January. Eliza found work as a charwoman. By 1901, her mother Elizabeth, now a widow was living with her daughter and young children. In 1906, Eliza married Oliver Levi Elliott, a gardener. The family moved to Lanfranc Road. The couple had three children, Doris, Olive and Gladys. The family continued to live in Lanfranc Road until Eliza's death on 25th April 1958. No probate.

Eliza Elliott nee Phippard with grandson David Robinson. A message for a current day family member:-

Eliza Phippard who lies to rest in Heene cemetery 21/05/1882 to 1958, she was a very petite lady and everyone remembers her as very dainty and a lovely lady. Her first husband died, they did not have children, she then married Oliver Levi Elliott and they had three daughters: Olive who married and lived in Guildford, no children Gladys who married Jim and had a son, David Guy, he tuned the pianos at The Pavillion Theatre and Glynbourne until his death two years ago. Doris Anne Elliott married Tom Robinson and they had my father David and a daughter Elizabeth Anne. Doris is buried in Durrington cemetery 08/10/1907 to 24/06/1980. Eliza was born in Swanage and we think her sister Martha may also be buried in Heene cemetery and her mother Elizabeth in Broadwater cemetery, Eliza died in Worthing hospital. Oliver Elliott did not treat Eliza very well and my father remembers as a boy the police being called to the house 29 Lanfranc Road, Worthing (they previously lived at 9 Lanfranc Road), this is why she did not want to be buried with him. Oliver Levi died in Worthing hospital several years after Eliza, he is buried in an unmarked grave in Broadwater cemetery, his father was a sheep farmer in Findon Valley and lived in the cottage on the corner of Bost Hill, my grandma, Doris Elliott remembers going to visit him, that was before all the modern houses were built in the Valley and the A24 was just a track! You and the team are doing such an amazing job of preserving Heene cemetery, thankyou from all the family. Kindest regards, Alex
