Memories and images shared by a family member
Eliza Phippard who lies to rest in Heene cemetery 21/05/1882 to 1958, she was a very petite lady and everyone remembers her as very dainty and a lovely lady. Her first husband died, they did not have children, she then married Oliver Levi Elliott and they had three daughters: Olive who married and lived in Guildford, no children Gladys who married Jim and had a son, David Guy, he tuned the pianos at The Pavillion Theatre and Glynbourne until his death two years ago. Doris Anne Elliott married Tom Robinson and they had my father David and a daughter Elizabeth Anne. Doris is buried in Durrington cemetery 08/10/1907 to 24/06/1980. Eliza was born in Swanage and we think her sister Martha may also be buried in Heene cemetery and her mother Elizabeth in Broadwater cemetery, Eliza died in Worthing hospital. Oliver Elliott did not treat Eliza very well and my father remembers as a boy the police being called to the house 29 Lanfranc Road, Worthing (they previously lived at 9 Lanfranc Road), this is why she did not want to be buried with him. Oliver Levi died in Worthing hospital several years after Eliza, he is buried in an unmarked grave in Broadwater cemetery, his father was a sheep farmer in Findon Valley and lived in the cottage on the corner of Bost Hill, my grandma, Doris Elliott remembers going to visit him, that was before all the modern houses were built in the Valley and the A24 was just a track! You and the team are doing such an amazing job of preserving Heene cemetery, thankyou from all the family. Kindest regards, Alex
