Life story

Edward Poland was born in Worthing in 1847, he was baptised on 8th August. His father, John, 44yrs, was a Farm Labourer, his mother, Ann Poland, nee Blann, 45yrs. He had 3 older siblings, Nancy 13, Ann 11, and John 8. When Edward was 13yrs, he was a Garden Labourer, he lived with his father, Edward, now a Carter by trade, and his mother, Ann, 58yrs at Heene House, Heene Lane. In 1869 when he was 19yrs, Edward married Martha Mitchell in Chichester, Sussex, and in 1870 their son, Frank William was born. Edward was a Tailor, but he took over as Innkeeper at the King and Queen Inn at 8, Brunswick Road, Worthing, where Edward described himself as a Tailor and Beerhouse Keeper in the 1871 census. Edward's grandfather, William Poland, d.1854, had also been the licensee of this public house. On 10th October 1877 Martha Poland died from Tuberculosis, aged 30yrs. Edward then married Sarah White in 1878 in the New Forest, Hampshire and in 1881 they had a daughter, Ellen. Edward remained a Beerhouse Keeper at the King and Queen public house, Brunswick Road. On 9th December 1884 Edward's son, Frank William, died from Tuberculosis, aged 14yrs. Edward Poland died on 19th April 1885, aged 37yrs. His death certificate gave the cause of death as "Haematemesis Exhaustion" (Tuberculosis)
