Life story

Life story

When Edith Harriett Hewett was born on 7 December 1865, her father was East India merchant, Arthur Fleming Hewett. Her mother was Olivia Mirabella Dowleans. Edith was born in Islington but two of her siblings were born in India. Her siblings were: Alexander Fleming Hewett (18641865) born in India, Arthur Fitzwilliam Hewett 18671870, Eleanor Katherine Hewett (1869-1908) born in Bengal and Arthur Stanley Hewett (18711929). She became a teacher of deaf teachers having founded the Eaton College for the Training of Deaf Teachers in Ealing.

She later co-founded a school for deaf children and adults in Bournemouth with her friend Nora Pirrie.

She died on 25 July 1952 at the age of 86. Her cremated remains were interred, denoted by a wall plaque, at Heene Cemetery, Worthing, Sussex.

Miss Edith Harriett Hewett, of 13 Longfellow-road, formerly head of the Ealing Training College for Teachers of the Deaf, and later co-principal of the School for Deaf Children, Bournemouth, who died on July 25, left £4,428 16s. 9d. (£4,343 13s. 7d. net value).
