Life story

Life story

Doris Austin Hopper was born in Sunderland, Durham, on 9th March 1893, she was the daughter of John William Hopper, 29yrs, shipowner's clerk, and Bertha, 28yrs, nee Hutt.

Doris had 2 older brothers, Bernard b.1889, and John b.1890.

Doris lived with her parents all her life, she never married and did not appear to have any occupation. The family lived in Sunderland for many years until her father retired when they moved to Hertfordshire; after his death in 1929, Doris continued to live with her widowed mother, moving to Devon and then Worthing, Sussex.

As a parishioner of Heene Church, Doris joined the Church Army, whose work was to help to form public conscience about such evils as slums and intemperate drinking, she involved herself in spreading their message through pageants and dramatic productions.

Doris's mother lived to the great age of 96yrs and after her death in 1961, Doris moved from Marine Parade, Worthing, to 7, Shakespeare Road, where she died, aged 75yrs, on 16th January 1968. Administration + Will (London April 1968) effects £1828. Value 2023 - £39,000.
