Life story

Life story

Diana was born in Madras, India, the daughter of  Edward Wardroper and his wife Mary Ann. Edward was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Madras Army. Mary Ann died in 1848 and Edward in 1853. Diana and her siblings were sent to Yorkshire, to live with their uncle Rev. Cutfield Wardroper, who was curate at Farnley Tyas. The Rev. Wardroper was a widower, so the children were looked after by a governess. On 12th January 1870 at St Lucius Church, Farnley Tyas, Diana married a merchant from Manchester, Klaus Pauw. He was a widower with a son. His first wife Joan had died in childbirth. The couple moved to Dunblane where Diana gave birth to a son, Edward on 14th November 1870. A daughter, Juanita was born in Stirling on 5th January 1873. The family moved to Ireland where on 3rd June 1875, a son Francis Cutfield Pauw was born. By 1875, Diana was ill with phthisis (TB) and the family moved to Worthing, living at Heene Cottage in Heene Road. Diana died on 12th September 1877 at Heene Cottage. Probate was granted on 28th September as "administration of the effects" to Klaus Pauw, merchant.

Klaus moved to East Dulwich and died in Hampshire in 1888.

Miscellaneous information

Huddersfield Chronicle 15th Jan 1870

FARNLEY TYAS. Marriage Festivities. -On Wednesday, the village of Farnley Tyas was full of activity, consequent upon the marriage of Miss Diana Wardroper, niece of the Rev. C  Wardroper, the incumbent, with Klaus Pauw Esq., merchant from the neighbourhood of Manchester. Long before eleven o'clock, the time appointed for the ceremony, the church was full with admiring spectators. Shortly afterwards the bridal cortege arrived at the church in four carriages and pairs, supplied by Mr. Coney, of Huddersfield. Matting was spread by the pupils of Miss Wardroper's Sunday school class from the entrance gates to the porch.  The parties entered the sacred edifice amid the good wishes of the whole congregation. The nuptial ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. Wardroper (uncle of the bride) assisted by the Rev. C. A. Hulbert, incumbent of Slaithwaite, and the Rev. W. H. Girling, vicar of Linthwaite. In the afternoon the whole of the day and Sunday school scholars were treated to a plentiful repast in the National Schoolroom, and subsequently tea was partaken of by about 80 old people of the locality in honour of the interesting event.
