Life story

Diana Emily Tibbits was born in Kings Norton, Leicestershire, in 1846; she was the daughter of Gervase Tibbits, 32yrs, farmer of 270 acres, and Diana, 32yrs, nee Simpkin. She was 1 of 9 children, having 6 sisters and 2 brothers.

Diana was 16yrs when her father died in 1862, and with her mother and siblings, left the farm and in 1871 were living at 43, Westbourne Park, Kensington, London, where she and 3 sisters, Lucy, Maria, and Selina, were all working as schoolmistresses.

On 19th February 1874, aged 27yrs, Diana married Ely Hill, 34yrs, a merchant, at St. Mary's, Staines. Ely conducted his trade in South America, and the couple settled in Rio de Janeiro where they had 3 children, Percy Forest b.1876, Eveline b.1879, and Gladys b.1886. Diana was widowed in 1895 when Ely died, aged 55yrs. She came to England in 1900 with Eveline, 20yrs, and Gladys, 14yrs, for Eveline's marriage to a Dutch shipbroker, and then they all returned to Buenos Aires. Eveline had a son, Gordon, in 1901, but she was widowed in 1902 and Diana returned in 1905 with her daughters and grandson to settle in England.

In 1911, they were living at St. Chad's, St. Michael's Road, Worthing, Sussex. Diana died on 12th April 1919, aged 73yrs, probate was granted to Percy Forest Hill, railway clerk, and Donald Robert Fergusson, brewer, effects £4695 16s 3d. Value 2022 - £258,300.
