Life story

Life story

Denis Rice Wade was born on 4th October 1864 in Walsall, Staffordshire, he was the son of James William Wade, 22yrs, an Inland Revenue Officer, and Harriett, 25yrs, nee Craddock.

His family moved south to London and on 20th July 1887 Denis, 23yrs, married Kate Anna Scott, 21yrs, at St. Andrew, Holborn, he was employed as a clerk. Denis and Kate moved to Brighton, Sussex, where Denis became the landlord of a public house, The Temple Inn, and by 1900 they had 5 children when Kate tragically died aged just 34yrs.

In 1901, Denis was the landlord of the Gladstone Arms, Brighton, and he married a Brighton girl, his wife was Edith Caroline Allen, 23yrs, and they had 2 sons, Bernard Denis b.1904, and Lewis Eustace b.1909.

He became a Mason in 1896, joining the Burrell Lodge, Brighton, and was an active member of the Brighton and County Licensed Victualler's Association, serving as chairman and then as a delegate representing the Association on behalf of its members.

In 1910 Denis was landlord of the Down View Hotel, West Worthing, living there with Edith and five of his younger children; he continued to represent the licensed victuallers of the town, organising the closure of all the pubs on the day of King Edward's funeral.

Denis died on 22nd November 1918, aged 53yrs, at Peckham House, Peckham, Surrey. Probate was granted to his widow, Edith Caroline, and Joseph Wilkins Parker, solicitor, effects, £6651 10s 4d. Value 2022 - £402K.
