Life story

Life story

Charles Trollope was born in Horningsham, Wiltshire, he was baptised on 22nd November 1846. His parents were, Stephen Trollope, 27yrs, and Elizabeth, 32yrs, nee Hinton. His father was an agricultural labourer, farming 2 acres of land. Charles had an older brother, Henry, 2yrs, and 2 more brothers, James, 1849, and Oliver, 1850. Charles and his brothers worked as agricultural labourers for their father from a young age, looking after the cows, sheep and farm birds. As an adult he became a coachman, following this career for forty years until he retired.

In 1868, Charles, 23yrs, married Harriett Barnes, 23yrs, on 29th September, at Horningham, their families were neighbours, she was the daughter of a farm labourer. Charles and Harriett moved to Patcham, Sussex, where they lived for thirty years, they had 3 children, Anne b.1870, Edward b.1876, and Eliza Kate b.1880. Charles was a coachman at Withdean Grange, and his brother, Oliver, now a gardener, lived with them.

After retiring, Charles and Harriett moved to Worthing, with unmarried daughter, Eliza Kate, living in St. Botolph's Road. Charles was widowed when Harriet died in 1916 and three years later, he died on 6th August 1919, aged 72yrs.
