When Arthur William Smith was born on 18 March 1908 in East Preston, Sussex, his father, William, was a jobbing gardener from Hampshire. His mother, Emmeline Eunice Frost was from Brighton. He had one brother and three sisters. He died on 20 May 1908, aged 2 months and was buried in Heene Cemetery, West Worthing, Sussex.
